Bambu Earth: Anyone else have a hard time receiving compliments?
The other day, one of our team members had someone tell him how smart he was. He just brushed it off and said, "Oh yeah, thanks" and quickly changed the subject. It's understandable: those situations can feel awkward.
But what if next time you had someone give you a compliment, you did something different: what if you really received it with a sincere "thank you"?
Why? Not only does it make for a better social interaction, but consider that the compliments you receive are actually TRUE. That team member, for example, really is smart. And if he just lets the compliment roll of him, he'll be less connected to what's true about himself and the world.
Our own inner voices constantly talk to us about ourselves. But lots of what they say isn't true. So when someone tells you something kind and positive that really is true, how about this:
Receive it. Believe it. Be present with it. Enjoy it.
